The Italian Volpino is a rustic adaptable and expressive dog, an excellent dynamic companion and an incorruptible warner (alarm ???), a pleasant cooperator who indifferently works in the most various atmospheric conditions.
Since ancient times it has been described from the novelists like a breed present in all Italian territory. When in our Country (when in Italy) the first railway nets were build the italian volpino was useful to couriers who carried out every day the mail service between a town to another and in those times all draymen (is it correct? I meant the men with the carts) had a volpino to guard their goods on their wagons/carts (?).
The small size, the beauty of the well proportionate shape, his fierce cheerful character , made to appreciate him also from roman and Florentine ladies as well as in the past century the volpino conquered notoriety like “volpino of Florence” or “volpino of the Quirinale (Quirinale was the official royal palace in Rome now seat of the President)
The Italian Volpino is still present in all Southern Italy , Sardinia and Sicily included, where he continues to carry out its traditional tasks. In fact in all the countrysides is a perfect alarm bell alone, but often together with the massive and formidable Cane Corso. The Italian Volpino is one of the few dogs who actively collaborate with the mollossian and it is amazing to observe them run the job, to guard the farms, in the villas, in the countryside, etc etc
The Volpino Italiano most popular for the hard work in the countryside, became therefore present in the small villages, in the cities and on this occasion very appreciate and well-known that still today it is possible to meet him like a watchful guardian in the courtyards and in the shops.
We can say that the “Italian Volpino” is a sort of “encyclopedic” dog, because he knows everything and does a little of all. In the forests and in the fields he will hunt every species of game: approaching it skillfully guided from his acute sense of smell, he will ambush then point it and at last, at a convenient time, seize it with a leap. If held in the farm, in a courtyard or in the garden he will be an excellent warner and a guardian and will give the alarm to the slightest noise and nobody (animal or human being) will succeed to intimidate him, moreover he will be an untiring hunter of mices, rats and all rodents.
Most lively, beautiful and always intelligent, he becomes attached in an extraordinary way to his master and thanks to his joviality he is the inseparable friend of the children; the Italian Volpino is a harmonic dog and own to his proportions he has a inning aspect, the hair has a glassy weave, never wooly neither silky and could be of different colours:
a) Red like a fox
b) Black
c) White one colour
d) Champagne
e) rarer, Grey
The Volpino Italiano with the traditional red hair, the same colour of a fox, is the most appreciated; in this variety the hair colour has two nuances: dark tawny or light tawny.
The eyes are very important for the typicalness of the Volpino: they make understand his temperament and character since the look is always alert and careful, typical in a very lively dog.
